How to donate a car to the Red Cross


It's time to get rid of your old car, but you do not want to go through the hassle of selling yourself. Put your mind at ease and donate your car to the American Red Cross.You will get a tax deduction for the fair market value of the vehicle, and feel good knowing that your car is going to a good cause. There are hundreds of national Red Cross chapters, so it's easy to find one in your area - and the donation process is virtually painless.

Connect to www.redcrossdonations.org, call 1-87 Red Cross (1-877-332-7677) toll free or emailRedCrossCars@aol.com to inquire about donating your car. If you live in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland click on the link "online form" on the Red Cross website to start the process.

Fill the car donation form online to the Red Cross. You will be asked your name, company, email address, phone number, address and best time to reach you.Enter the year, make, model, style and color and approximate mileage of the car you want to donate.You will be asked if the car is driven, if and when it was last inspected, and if the title is free and clear of liens, so that information is available. Note if the car has any problems or mechanical damage. When all questions have been answered, click "Submit."

Click the "Donate" and "find your local chapter" on the Red Cross website, if you live in a state not listed in Step 1. Type in your zip code and click "find" or browse Red Cross chapter websites for contact information for a chapter in your area. Access to the website of the local branch to see if they have a car donation program, or call or email them to find out.

Complete the information on the back of your car title to transfer it to the Red Cross. Write "American Red Cross" to the name of the purchaser, and the sale price as a "gift." Enter the title where indicated under "the signature of the seller." You must fill in the date of sale, and give the title to the Red Cross representative who picks up your car.

Make an appointment with the Red Cross to collect your donated car. They will pick up the car for free anywhere, whether at home, at work or at a dealership where you buy another car. Hand over your car keys and completed and signed title and receive a receipt by the Red Cross representative.

Receive a receipt by mail of the Red Cross about two or three weeks after you give your car. After your car donation is sold by the Red Cross to a new owner, you will receive IRS Form # 1098 by mail, and this will show the actual selling price. The letter of acknowledgment, and received your IRS Form should all be kept secure and used to deduct the donation on your annual tax return location.

Tips & Warnings 

  • The search of the fair market value of your car using Kelly Blue Book or NADA, and discuss the value with the representative of the Red Cross.
  • The Red Cross can pick up your vehicle within one to three days to call for an appointment.
  • Ask a Red Cross ID card to verify the safety of your car donation.
  • Fill your clarification, as errors can be difficult and time consuming to correct
